There was a little description about our Liver-on-a-Chip project. Our research project is partially funded by the Dupont-MIT Alliance, and Dupont recently donated another $25 million to the alliance. It was really cool to see our research getting some press attention and to see the work that our team has been putting into the project has been very valuable. In a nutshell, what our research is trying to accomplish is to design a device allows for high throughput evaluation of drugs under development by simulating a liver through a bioreactor. Its pretty neat stuff, and the lab is really awesome. There are people from all disciplines working there which contributes to a greater understanding of the issues facing the device. Ive actually nicknamed the device Moo-Moo for no reason at all. This is my second UROP here at MIT. The way I managed to get this one is I emailed a lot of professors who were doing interesting research. I tried not to be too picky because learning is learning, and youll get that in pretty much all UROPs. A couple days later, I got a response from the director of the BPEC who forwarded the message out to her lab, and Ive been a member of the lab ever since last October. My first UROP freshman year was in the Humans and Automation Lab where I researched how people evaluate computer software for errors. There is gradual narrowing of the breathing tubes as the surrounding muscles of the airways get tightened. This results in rapid breathing with whistling or wheezing sound as the air is forced through the narrow airways. This is the reason Jessica experienced wheezing and shortness of breath. Children under the age of five manifest the asthma like symptoms. Jessica manifested asthma like symptoms before the age of three. The children have smaller airways and when swelling occurs due to viral infections blocks or tightens the air flow due to increased mucus (Stocks, Hislop and Sonnappa 2013, pp.728-742). This results in breathing problems in the small children. The asthma primarily narrows down the breathing airways as inflammation occurs in the lungs airways. Jessicas airways are swollen and she is having difficulty in breathing. She was not able to get proper sleep as she experienced shortness and noisy breathing. Allergens irritate the airways and constrict the airways. Moreover, there is excess mucus production that also triggers the asthmatic symptoms. The expansion of the wall linings leads to contraction of the bronchioles as well as the pathway. Her past medical history showed that she had viral infection and eczema after the common cold during winters. Jessica suffered from eczema which is a mild allergic skin infection that triggered during the winter season after she had common cold. The irritants expose the airways to allergic response and triggers responses like swelling, spasm and excess mucus production (Agache et al. 2012, pp.835-846). This response results in high pitched wheezing sound during exhalation. In the same way, eczema might have caused Jessicas airways to swell and difficulty in breathing. The mild skin disorder like eczema worsened the conditions of asthma in Jessica. At times, the pet animals are also a source of allergy as the children play with them. Jessicas family background reported that the family had pets. There are two long-haired dogs and one short-haired cat in the family. Jessica also helped her grandmother with the pets. The pet animals are also a potential source of allergy that might have triggered asthma symptoms in Jessica (Huckvale, Car, Morrison and Car 2012, p.144). It is very useful in relieving the patient from asthma symptoms like coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and tightness in the chest. It helps to relieve the patient from breathlessness; however, it does not prevent the symptoms from happening. It acts as an instant reliever from the symptoms of asthma. Jessica is prescribed inhaled salbutamol 2.5mgs six puffs three doses 20 minutes apart. Salbutamol is weight or age dependent. Jessica weighed 20 kgs and is below the age of six. So, she requires 2.5mgs of six puffs Salbutamol via a nebulizer. In the same way, salbutamol relieved Jessica of her asthmatic symptoms with salbutamol puffs. Whenever she had episodes of wheezing or the airways get narrowed and there is difficulty in breathing, salbutamol is administered so that she is able to breathe. It greatly relieved her of the asthma attack (Vichyanond, Pensrichon and Kurasirikul 2012, pp.15-25). She uses the salbutamol through an inhaler and spacer that help in direct assistance and passing this into her lungs. In the given case study, Jessica was prescribed salbutamol puff and spacer by the emergency department consultant and administered by the registered nurses. With the continuous administration of salbutamol puff, she was able to breathe properly. It significantly reduced the episodes of asthmatic attacks in Jessica. Gradually, she reported that her breathing is becoming normal with increased spacing between the salbutamol doses. Another steroid named prednisolone was also given to Jessica as it helped to prevent the inflammatory substance release in the body. When she arrived at the emergency department at 0400 hours, her oxygen saturation levels were 90% on air. So, the doctor prescribed non-re-breather facemask with reservoir consists of one-way valve system that prevents mixing of exhaled gases with fresh gas flow. It ensures highest concentration of oxygen to Jessica practiced in emergency department. Conclusion Asthma is a chronic disorder that involves the inflammation of the respiratory pathways. Researchers have long been puzzled by autism, or childhood autism as it is often referred to. This severely disabling disorder affects approximately 80,000 children in the United States and is usually diagnosed by therapists and psychologists before the onset of two and a half years of age. Doctors note many of the complex disorders and symptoms associated with autism during the months of infancy. Babies who would normally look toward recognizable voices and reach out to people are often times devoid of these social growth indicators. The absence of obvious indicators of emotion, such as smiling and laughing have caused researchers and doctors in the past to label autistic children as emotionally flat. Researchers, since the release of recent study outcomes, have retracted this label. There are generally five areas of developmental disorder most prevalent in children diagnosed with autism. One of these areas relates to, and in the past led to the labeling of emotional flatness. Autistic disorder often creates in a child a lack of social understanding and a lack of comprehension of social interaction by and toward others. Extreme withdrawal from social situations is often apparent. This behavior is often documented and referred to by the term self-isolation. It will be discussed at a later time how professionals work with autistic children in the treatment of this particular behavior along with the treatment of other clinical evidence recognized in autistic children. Development in language skills is often times absent in an autistic child. The tendency to engage in self-stimulatory behavior is often apparent by movements such as rocking back and forth and constant throat humming and on an extreme level, banging of the head repetitively. The latter is usually associated with anger or abrupt change in their environment which causes negative behavior and physical aggression toward self or others. Therapists have used methods such as puzzle piecing or card sorting as a redirection away from these self-stimulatory behaviors. Although putting puzzles together is a well accomplished task by many autistic children, they do often have trouble performing gross motor activities. A lot of repeated assistance and routine patterns is the best way to assist an autistic child in learning activities or schedules due to their low memory ability. A consistent routine can be the key to teaching an autistic child how to learn and perform a specific task. This is believed to be a major plus for the institutional setting, which allows for a routine with no abrupt changes that are so prevalent in the average American home. One major area of importance when working with a person diagnosed with autism is to set a daily routine and follow it with consistency. To a person with autism, a break in a routine or a change of method is not immediately comprehended. Unlike the normal rate of learning, it may take an autistic child two years to learn simple daily tasks such as tying a shoelace, given they are taught using a consistent method and pattern for this specific task. John was trying to introduce the reader into the â€Å"labyrinth of life† and persuade us to look for our own â€Å"Great Perhaps† (purpose in life). John did a pretty good job gathering us into the labyrinth and making us think about what we really want. He hides the real meaning; his thoughts about what he really thinks about life in the story. He created a story that could be easily enjoyed by everyone that reads the book and still has the result he wanted. Reading the book was very worth it. Now I have a different perspective of life. How I see life now is as a game, a challenge, a puzzle and if I find the way to win the game, surpass the challenge or solve the puzzle life will have a reward for me. Even though there were parts in the book that seemed that something was missing it was kid of the purpose; leaving the reader thinking about what was the next event. Irony of War Exposed in Dulce et Decorum, Regeneration, and Quiet on the Western Front    Many of the young officers who fought in the Great War enlisted in the army with glowing enthusiasm, believing that war was played in fancy uniforms with shiny swords. They considered war as a noble task, an exuberant journey filled with honor and glory. Yet, after a short period on the front, they discovered that they had been disillusioned by the war: fighting earned them nothing but hopelessness, death and terror. They had lost their lives to the lost cause of war, which also killed their innocence and youth. They were no longer boys but callous men. Wilfred Owen's poem "Dulce et Decorum Est", Pat Barker's novel Regeneration, and Erich Maria Remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front, all portray the irony between the delusive glory of war and the gruesome reality of it, but whereas Owen and Sassoon treat the theme from a British point of view, Remarque allows us to look at it from the enemy's. The poem "Dulce et Decorum Est", an anti-war poem by Wilfred Owen who was an English footsoldier, states that it is not sweet and fitting to die a hero's death for a country. Right off in the first line, Owen describes the troops as being "like old beggars under sacks" (1). This metaphor indicates that the men are battle weary and suggests reluctance. They also have been on their feet for days and appear to be drained of youth as they "marched asleep" (5) and "limped on, blood-shod" (6). Overall, in the first stanza, Oundjian 2 there seems to be a tension between old and young because it shows how the impact of an endless war has reduced these once energetic young men to the point where they could be referred to as "old" (1), "lame" (6) and... ...s, demonstrated through the author's talent, are denouncing the authority figures who were supposed to guide his generation into adulthood but instead turned the youth against each other in the pursuit of superficial ideals. Success

Success in my own words. Success is an enigmatic entity. Most of us pursue it as a fixed entity that will magically leave us content. But according to me, that is as far from the truth as can be. Because contentment is the enemy of success. The moment I were to feel that I am content, is the moment my success stops. The passion to challenge myself is the fuel that I need to burn in order to keep achieving success. It is very common in India that right from a very young age, our success is measured as a factor relative to the success of our peers.I do not try to compare myself with others, which I think is the most destructive thing one can do. Every person is unique, and every person has their own strengths and weaknesses. I have always believed that I am my own best friend. And my idea of a best friend is someone with whom I can compete fiercely, and constantly. This means that I am always trying to outdo myself. Each time I reach the peak of my achievement, I would've already set m y eyes on something higher. And I am relentless in my pursuit of any and every goal I set for myself.This does not mean that I do not revel in my moments of achievement. I give myself the occasional pat on the back. And I think it is essential to do so, because motivation is like the lubricant that keeps the gears of success going. And as an engine with copious amounts of fuel, without a lubricant, eventually grinds to a halt, damaging the engine permanently, without motivation, one's success may seem to go leaps and bounds in the beginning, but eventually will come to a complete and permanent halt. I have seen many people be deliberately unenthusiastic about their achievements to he outside world.This will eventually lead to a never ending void in us, that no amount of success can fill. Success is a thing to be celebrated, and something hidden from the world is never a celebration. But once again, we must be careful not to let ourselves run amok, as there is a very thin line that s eparates celebration from extravagance. And extravagance almost always leads to lethargy, dousing the flames of passion and motivation. And that is where the final ingredient in this mechanism of success comes in- hard work.If passion is the fuel and motivation the lubricant that runs the engine of success, then hard work is the spark plug that ignites the mixture, and keeps it burning strong. Without hard work, no great plans of grandeur can come to fruition. I think that a perfect balance of passion, motivation and hard work is what is required to achieve long lasting, tangible success. If either one goes out of proportion, then success becomes elusive and seemingly impossible to achieve.

The Civil War In Syria Is Not Like Typical Internal Conflicts

The Civil war in Syria is not like typical internal conflicts due to the sheer number of different groups fighting in the same small territory. Primarily, this is a fight for power in the nation of Syria and each group has a special affinity for the land. This has led to a power struggle in the small area, and the people of the nation, whether they are fighting or not, are all suffering in different ways. There are some who have chosen to fight for their cause. They are not the majority, however. Many, half of the country in fact, have been displaced and forced to walk miles, in temperatures estimated more that 120 degrees fahrenheit, from their home country to refugee camps after suffering directly and immensely in their own homes. Not†¦show more content†¦Hearing loss is very common in places where bombs have been used frequently and aggressively, like the Syrian conflict. Although there are groups who have dedicated their time to helping refugees regain physical mobility and restore hope in the world, not many, outside of camps can completely understand and recognize anything but the visible, physical damages which are more easily spotted than the mental and internal damages. These are also broadcast more than internal injuries because their is a picture to put with the injury. A group based in Chicago has made strides toward raising awareness for the issue while working on and treating individuals and their specific challenges with hearing loss. Deaf Planet Soul, the Chicago-based organization, went on a two week crusade to assist Syrians who have become deaf or had any loss of hearing. The charity is not only treating those affected by the war, but that is their main focus. A case which gained global recognition is of Aya, a now fatherless girl. She was able to hear her mother tell her she missed her after she had travelled to Chicago to regain hearing with implants and regain the ability to communicate with her mother and grandmother, her only relatives not massacred by a rocket which struck her house in 2012.
